How can an Occupational Therapist help me with sex & intimacy?

An occupational therapist is a medical professional who is holistic, science-based, and patient-oriented. Basically, what’s important to you is important to us. Typically, in traditional settings, such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, schools, and rehabilitation facilities, occupational therapists will work with clients on activities of daily living, functional mobility, instrumentalized activities of daily living (cooking, cleaning, driving, shopping, etc.), sensory processing, and overall helping clients attain their desired level of independence.

Within the sex and intimacy realm, occupational therapists provide a unique skillset to evaluate, assess, and provide solutions to help the client reach their sex and intimacy related goals. By holistically evaluating a client’s personal factors, performance factors, and motivations, occupational therapists take a pleasure-focused approach to work with clients so they can engage in sex and intimacy after recovering from illness and/or injury, along with navigating chronic illness. Occupational therapists can help educate clients on making adaptations to their environment, create routines to support client participation in sex, utilize assistive equipment as needed, and help a client understand & support their sensory needs.
